My thanks to my husband, Neal, for today’s post. This was his contribution to First Christian Church’s 2009 Advent Devotional and I asked as soon as I saw it if I could share it with you.
Neal graciously agreed, so here is his Letter to God.
Dear God,
I am so serious. Do I really think I am, or must be, in control of everything? Life has no joy or laughter all too often. It is deadly serious. Souls must be saved. The message must be preached. Focus. FOCUS! FOCUS!
Please be quiet, Children! Your laughter and silly games keep me from doing my work. Can’t you see this is serious?
You say you are children and this is what you do?
You say that to be a child is to run and play and laugh, to look up and see that the sky is blue and wonder why?
You say that being a child is going to sleep at night content that your parents have life under control?
You say that hurts and pains vanish in an instant with a kiss on the forehead and a hug?
Wait, wait. You say that Jesus hugged the little children. You say that unless I have that level of trust I am doomed to trying to do this life all on my own?
How amazing, yet how simple. The Christ Child brings back to us laughter and joy, hope and amazement. You say all we have to do is run and jump into his arms? How wonderful!
So that’s what the Child in the manger brings to us. He is indeed worthy of worship, of our best gifts, of laughter and jumping, of squeals of joy and giggles. Let us bring our hearts to Him this Christmas time full of joy.
That is truly one of the best gifts we can give to the Child.
