Another Developed Idea: What Now?

I found myself in an interesting – and surprising – position today.

Since deciding to give Saving Grace two weeks off (December 11 – 25), I’ve been developing a potential NaNo 2010 idea. Snowflake, character development, story background, time line…. You name it.

So far, it’s all amounted to over 20,000 words. It has been great learning about the characters before putting them into any fictional settings. It has been a lot of fun getting to know the three main characters and seeing what motivates and compels them.

The only difficulty is that when I finished work for the day yesterday, I had the very clear sense that I’d done everything there was to do except write the story.

Tonight, I still feel that way. Other than making one note in the journal, I’ve done nothing with that idea all day and I haven’t missed it at all.

I don’t want to start writing until after Saving Grace is done because there is the very real possibility that it will take over and I’ll lose track of Grace.

So I’ve been finding other things to do. Today, all of my writing (except a couple of journal entries) has been fiction. Over 3,300 words so far and I still have a couple of hours to go.

I’ve also worked on four paintings today, so it’s been a good day all the way around.

I have to wait only until December 25, when Grace will officially be two weeks ‘cool’ and I’ll be able to start the first read through. Until then? Who knows. Unless some other ‘hot idea’ comes to mind, I’ll be going day to day, waiting until each morning to see what strikes me with inspiration.
