Commit to the Lord Whatever You Do

“Commit unto the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”

That quote from Proverbs 16:3 (NIV) is hanging on the wall to the left of my computer.

It used to be in my studio when my studio was upstairs. When I moved the studio downstairs, the quote made the move, too, but ended up in the office. I decided to put it in the office instead of the studio because of the different ways I work in each location.

When I’m painting, I’m pretty focused on either the painting or on the reference I’m using.

Writing and computer work is more prone to long, thoughtful stares and pondering.

The poster is positioned so that it is clearly visible by simply turning my head as I sit at the computer or by looking up when I’m in the recliner. My gaze goes to it almost by default. It is, probably, second only to the rotation of landscape and horse photos in my screen saver rotation.

If I remember correctly, I set the poster up and printed it almost seven years ago. Right after I was married; right after I moved from Michigan to Kansas. Right after I set out on this brand new, exciting and somewhat intimidating journey called marriage. At the time, I was facing a lot of changes and most of them looked huge. That promise of the Lord’s blessing was welcome as I considered a spouse, relocation nearly 1,000 from home and family and becoming a full-time artist.

It is no less relevant these days. When any of a dozen ideas seem to have equal merit or none of them look good, it’s a welcome balm to know God is with me.

Even when I don’t feel Him particularly close.
